Jul' 2012: 'From Stillness to Movement' with Kamal Thapen & Claire Rennie

Workshop Summary
'From Stillness to Movement' was a Workshop for for people with interest in either Tai Chi or the Alexander Technique who wante to explore the relationships between them.

The day was led by Kamal Thapen focussing on the Tai Chi Yang Style short form, with aspects being explored to give depth to participants practice. Also included were the 5 Gates Qigong, a Tai Chi Warm-ip, Ba Gua Jin Qigong and Tian Shou. Movement interspersed with periods of stillness.

Claire Rennie introduced the Alexander Technique and gave participants 'hands-on' Alexander Technique awareness and guidance while being led through their Tai Chi by Kamal Thapen. The day ended by applying the the Alexander Technique in a sitting imeditation.

The day took place in a quiet and beautiful garden near Clapham South with the benefit of periods outside and inside, and the pleasure of enjoying a 'Bring and Share' lunch! With a marquee, the day went ahead without disruption even with the intermittent showers of the British Summer!
Participant Feedback
Excellent day - a good mix of Tai Chi and Alexander Technique with a good pace. Kamal and Claire were both excellent and it took place in a lovely garden and marquee. It was a lovely way to spend a Sunday. I enjoyed being outdoors and meeting other people.
A really good day, glad I came - thank you.
Excellent day - varied and enjoyable. I found the Tai Chi and Qigong was very good and it has made me want to do more Alexander work. Beautiful garden.
Excellent all round. Lovely, good for all levels - great to have the Tai Chi / Alexander links. I enjoyed the Alexander background, Kamal and Claire were wonderful and the 'hands-on' assistance during the tai Chi postures was very helpful. Great location and outdoor space.
Most benefcial aspects for me were returning to Tai Chi; the spacious pacing of the day - reminding me of my long back and all of the delightful Alexander touches! A perfect day - AND great people - renewing old connections and making new ones.
Very good day. The content was good. Kamal had suggested that it might be a bit basic for me (about to qualify as a Tai Chi teacher), but I really enjoy re-visiting and starting at the beginning again. Wasn't expecting to find the Alexander Technique so interesting and engaging. I always like Kamal's calm, relaxed style and Claire has a vibrant energy and great warm smile (as does Kamal). I loved the location - very peaceful, lovely grass.

All in all, I really enjoyed the day and went home feeling relaxed and positive. My back also felt good. Sometimes it can feel a bit sore after being on my feet all day. Think that the 'Alexander Technique lying down' did it a lot of good, will be incorporating it into my practice. Thank you both very much.
Excellent day - varied, supportive and well paced. Kamal and Claire were excellent and the location was Fab! A wonderful day with wonderful people - Thank you.
