Professor Alice Roberts

Professor Alice Roberts is an academic, author and broadcaster.

She makes programmes and writes books about human anatomy, physiology, embryology, evolution, archaeology and history. She passionately believes that universities are about generating and spreading knowledge to the widest possible audience.

Professor Roberts is a medical doctor, and went on to become a university lecturer. She taught human anatomy to students and doctors, and did research into human origins and disease in ancient skeletons. But all the time, she felt that it was important to engage with people outside universities, of all ages and backgrounds. She has been Professor of Public Engagement with Science at the University of Birmingham since 2012.

Two of her books that will be available at the talk are listed below:

The Incredible Unlikeliness of Being: Evolution and the Making of Us

Alice Roberts tells us about the most amazing story on the planet - the creation of the human animal. Nothing is more extraordinary and her guided tour of the human body takes us on a fascinating journey of self-discovery (Desmond Morris)

'Alice Roberts's engagingly personal style connects you to your ancestors, to your own beginnings as a single cell ... You emerge from her book entertained and with a deeper understanding of yourself' Richard Dawkins. (Richard Dawkins)

Tamed: Ten Species that Changed our World

"A masterpiece of evocative scientific storytelling." (Brian Cox)

"Epic and joyous, a landmark in the story of us." (Adam Rutherford)

"Two recent pioneers of the history of humanity are Jared Diamond, author of Guns, Germs and Steel, and Yuval Noah Harari, in his book Sapiens. It is a teeming subject, about which Roberts is multiply qualified to write, as an anatomist, archaeologist, anthropologist, paleopathologist and professor of public engagement in science. Roberts remains composed, engaging and undogmatic throughout… Tamed is an excellent point of entry for anyone who wants to understand the new deep human history and what it portends." (Peter Forbes, Guardian)
