10 Feb 2018 - FM Alexander's 4 Little Squeezes - Seán Carey
A half day course at HITE Harley Street on
Saturday 10 Feb 2018 - 1:30-4:30pm
Following on from the success of Seán's latest book, Think More, Do Less, his fascinating account of individual lessons and small groups with Marjory Barlow, this workshop is a unique opportunity to explore FM's work for you and your pupils. Marjory referred to certain manipulations performed on the pupil by FM as "his 4 little squeezes". These involved FM directing his hands together without contracting or tightening in the rest of his musculature in order to encourage the conditions for release and kinaesthetic re-education in the pupil. Seán will also cover the relevance of going on to the toes, wall work and hands on the back of the chair for you and your pupils.
In this workshop Seán will draw on his knowledge, observation and experience of lessons with a number of first-generation Alexander technique teachers, his time spent working on five STAT-approved training courses, and the many hours exchanging work with his contemporaries, to save you having to reinvent the (Alexander) 'wheel' by learning some basic, practical rules about preparing, placing and positioning your hands to execute some of FM's teaching techniques.
All attendees will have the opportunity to buy Think More, Do Less at the special workshop price of only £10.00 (Normal price is £18.99).
Seán Carey - biography
Seán Carey PhD studied social science as both an undergraduate and postgraduate at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He started taking lessons in the Alexander Technique as part of his rehabilitation and recovery from a motorcycle accident in which his right leg and foot were badly broken. He became so fascinated with the process that he went on to train as a teacher qualifying in 1986 at Alexander Teaching Associates (ATA).
Before, while and after training Seán also had lessons from a number of teachers taught by FM Alexander, including Marjory Barlow, Walter Carrington, Sidney Holland and Peggy Williams. He has worked on five STAT-approved teacher training courses. He has published five other books on the Technique and written for Athletics Weekly, The Guardian, The Independent, The Irish Times and New African.
Seán will be assisted by Claire Rennie, who trained with Shoshana Kaminitz and Kamal Thapen, who trained with Walter Carrington. They will share their experience of different approaches to teaching the Alexander Technique.
