An event for Alexander Technique teachers 'Three-dimensional Mindfulness’ with Peter Nobes on Saturday afternoon of 21st Sep 2019 from 1:30-4:30pm at 10 Harley Street, London W1G 9PF.
Why did I call my book on the Alexander Technique ‘Mindfulness in 3D’? We all believe in mind/body unity, but if you search for ‘Alexander Technique’ online you’ll mainly see references to bodies: ‘posture’, ‘movement’ and ‘back pain’. Where has the ‘mind’ bit gone? Erika Whittaker said that FM, late in his life, was ‘severely disappointed’ that his work was being turned into bodywork when for him it had been about thinking.
In the introduction to ‘FM Alexander: the Man and his Work,’ Troup Matthews says of Lulie Westfeldt ‘…one realised that her poise came from a constant, sharpened awareness of the world around her.’ Is that what FM meant when he said ‘the conscious mind must be quickened’?
In my teaching over the last quarter-century I have found that the best way to get a pupil's Primary Control activated is to ask them to leave their body alone and, as Matthews said, to sharpen their awareness of the world around them: to invite them to be three-dimensionally mindful.
In this workshop we’ll find out how changing our conscious mind affects our bodies. We’ll experiment with switching on the Primary Control without using ‘Directions’, and we’ll look at ways to get the principles of the Alexander Technique across to our pupils without ‘chairwork,’ semi-supine or classical ‘procedures.’
Peter Nobes has been teaching the Alexander Technique since 1993. He is based in central London and has taught Alexander in 13 countries on three continents. His book “Mindfulness in 3D – the Alexander Technique for the 21st Century” was published in 2018. When he isn’t teaching, Peter builds wooden boats and then rows, paddles and sails them.
All participants will receive a record of attendance after the event.
Please book early to avoid disappointment as places are limited and note that no refunds will be possible after 7th Sep 2019.
