A half day course at HITE Harley Street on
Saturday 22 February 2020 - 1:30-4:30pm

An event for Alexander Technique teachers, 'FM Alexander's 4 little squeezes - plus more', with Seán Carey on Saturday afternoon of 22th February 2020 from 1:30-4:30pm at 10 Harley Street, London W1G 9PF.

FM Alexander famously said that the insights derived from correctly performing hands over the back of a chair themselves provide everything an Alexander teacher needs to know about performing hands-on work. In a nutshell, the chair exercise involves you going into ‘monkey’ and then, with straight fingers and thumbs, ‘gently and firmly’ squeezing the top rail of a chair. At the same time, your wrists are directed inwards and your elbows outwards, while ordering the upper part of your arms to widen and your back musculature to release and widen. As recounted in Seán's latest book, Think More, Do Less, Marjory Barlow referred to certain manipulations performed by FM in chair and table work with a pupil using this ‘means whereby’ as ‘his 4 little squeezes’.

In this workshop, Seán will draw on his experience of working with a number of first-generation Alexander teachers, as well as his contemporaries, to show you not only what’s entailed in FM’s ‘4 little squeezes’ but also how you can extend that artful use of your hands, including 3 innovative ways of teaching your pupils to initiate the movement into walking more efficiently.

Note: All attendees will have the opportunity to buy Think More, Do Less at the special workshop price of only £10.00 (Normal price is £18.99).

Seán Carey - biography

Seán Carey PhD studied social science as both an undergraduate and postgraduate at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He started taking lessons in the Alexander Technique as part of his rehabilitation and recovery from a motorcycle accident in which his right leg and foot were badly broken. He became so fascinated with the process that he went on to train as a teacher qualifying in 1986 at Alexander Teaching Associates (ATA).
Before, during and after training Seán had lessons from a number of teachers taught by FM Alexander, including Marjory Barlow, Walter Carrington, Sidney Holland and Peggy Williams. He has worked on five STAT-approved teacher training courses. He has also published six books on the Technique and written about it for Athletics Weekly, Talkback and The Irish Times.

Seán will be assisted by Claire Rennie, who trained with Shoshana Kaminitz and Kamal Thapen, who trained with Walter Carrington. They will share their experience of different approaches to teaching the Alexander Technique.
